I especially love that top photo… what a nice catch! I love our local jays, too, but since this one is so different he seems exotic to me.

The Steller’s Jay is quite different from the Scrub Jays we see more of around here. They are all beautiful in their own way.

  4. Congratulations! What a beauty. He’s looking right at you, too! That first photo is greeting-card worthy. You could print up a handful, and have birthday cards ready to go for the year. Well done!

I too spend plenty of time either standing frozen near the feeders or fences, or running to get my camera, only to return to…nothing.

Thanks! Yes, it’s frustrating when I miss a shot like that. Just this week, I missed a gorgeous coyote running by on the hill behind our house, and the next day, I missed a deer eating acorns out of an oak tree.

      1. Wow! You see some amazing creatures from your home. I’m quite envious. I watched a squirrel this morning push his head in and out of the slats in the fence. It was so cute. Once I grabbed my camera, poof!

  6. Fantastic, I have been trying to one of these guys for a long time. They visit my deck often, but won’t sit for a portrait.

Really, I’ve been trying to catch a photo of this one for months. So skittish! I finally got some shots by leaving the back door open and took photos from inside the house. πŸ™‚

Thanks! It’s a funny thing. These birds are so bold when I see them out camping, yet so skittish and shy in my yard.

I’m guessing that is because when you are out camping you’re in their ‘hood’ when they approach a feeder I suspect they are very aware they are in your ‘hood’ πŸ˜‰
        Tis a beautiful bird.

You’re probably right. Also, many consider these birds to be a pest, so they may be chased out of other yards. I like their sassy nature!
